OS
VMS/XDE
Product Overview
VMS/XDE is an OpenVMS x86 development environment for Linux and WIndows (via WSL). It provides a familiar user experience for OpenVMS developers working in Linux and Windows yet offers 100% binary and file system compatilibilty with OpenVMS.
VMS/XDE includes OpenVMS V9.2-3 user, supervisor and executive mode operating system environments and a set of x86 native compilers and layered products geared towards OpenVMS software development and testing.
OpenVMS/XDE is currently distributed as a beta version that will be operational until January 31, 2026. The preinstalled software is licensed for the duration of the beta test.
For the commercial version later, you will need the same set of licenses that you would install on a regular OpenVMS development environment: e.g. Base Operating Environment and compilers.
Any feedback on the environment is welcome, and we will use it to develop it according to your needs.

Features
VMS/XDE is a modern development environment which makes your work easier, bringing OpenVMS development tools and modern IDEs and processes closer together.
It comes with a preinstalled set of compilers, development tools and layered products. Additional OpenVMS-compatible applications can be installed via PCSI as on a "usual" OpenVMS system.
VMS/XDE is neither an emulator nor a virtual machine, but a compatibility layer, much like Wine (a Linux solution for running Windows applications).
Features and advantages of VMS/XDE:
- 100% API compatibility with OpenVMS
- OpenVMS files can be stored directly on the host Linux disk, no extra conversion or connection schemes needed.
- You can use your favorite tools for VMS development (source control systems, IDE, etc)
- Easy integration with CI/CD pipelines
- Simple installation: just extract the package and you're good to go!
- Zero setup: all included software is already preconfigured.
Get a license
Most non-Open Source products require a valid license to operate. If you need to get a license for a product or OpenVMS itself, please look at the page describing the possible options.
Migrate to x86
OpenVMS is now available for x86/64 architecture, offering a reliable and up-to-date option to run your software in the future.
We are ready to give you all the information needed to evaluate the migration project, move your solutions to x86, and start using them in a working environment.
